An evening storm is coming into the Maze District. I had been here for 4 days before this night, exploring one of the most remote areas in the lower 48 states.
Getting here involves miles of high clearance, 4-wheel drive roads that have not been maintained since they were built in the 1950's.
The Maze District is the part of Canyonlands National Park that is west of the Colorado and Green Rivers. This image is of the Chocolate Drops in the Maze. The Maze itself is about a 2 x 2 mile square of tortuous canyons of this layered white sandstone.
Earlier in the day I had walked into the Maze to see the Harvest Wall and returned to the Overlook to watch the day end. For a brief moment a shaft of light broke through the cloud cover to only shed its light on the Chocolate Drops. It was another rare experience.
